As part of the Belo Monte licensing process, Norte Energia is implementing a series of actions aimed at mitigating impacts and strengthening the project’s operating area. Currently, 43 initiatives are underway and another 74 have been completed, out of a total of 117 plans, programs, and projects originally planned in the Basic Environmental Project (PBA), covering control, prevention, compensation, and social and environmental measures. Additionally, one plan, 11 programs, and 30 specific projects under the Basic Environmental Plan for the Indigenous Component (PBA-CI) are under development, all of which are in the implementation phase.
We adopt continuous impact remediation processes, based on integrated management mechanisms, environmental monitoring, and ongoing dialogue with the communities involved, which is achieved through adaptive management. Mitigation actions are continually improved based on the results of monitoring programs and participatory workshops, ensuring that Norte Energia’s operations are aligned with sustainability principles and comply with legal guidelines.
To ensure transparency and proximity, mainly due to licensing, relationship channels were created, including:
- The Belo Monte HPP Social Monitoring Forum, a permanent space for interaction with stakeholders and the community.
- Direct communication channels, such as the Belo Monte 24/7 Call Center Service (0800 091 2810), RedePop Norte Energia (via messaging app), fixed offices, and Communication Centers in Volta Grande do Xingu.
- Ham Radio System for indigenous peoples, with more than 120 stations installed, ensuring communication even with the most isolated villages.
- Whistleblower and Contact Us Channels, available on the Norte Energia website to register questions, complaints and other statements.
Demands are followed-up using a monitoring system that ensures traceability from the moment the complaint is filed until its resolution. The level of public satisfaction is assessed through meetings, official letters and other interactions.
Additionally, we prioritize stakeholder engagement and ongoing dialogue with communities and regulatory bodies through initiatives such as:
- Community Participation and Qualified Listening, which provide interaction with local communities, especially indigenous ones, through the Indigenous Assistance System.
- Communication Centers and RedePop Norte Energia, promoting the exchange of information with the population.
- Periodic reports to environmental agencies, detailing mitigation and compensation actions.
- Internal training to reinforce the social and environmental awareness of our employees.
- Strategic partnerships with NGOs and public institutions.
These processes reflect our responsible and transparent actions in repairing environmental and social impacts, promoting management that integrates sustainable development, and engagement regarding legal and ethical obligations.
At the same time, we finance the Xingu Sustainable Regional Development Plan, created by Presidential Decree No. 7340 of 2010 and updated by Decree No. 10729 dated June 23, 2021. The Plan aims to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life in ten municipalities in Pará: Altamira, Anapu, Brasil Novo, Medicilândia, Pacajá, Placas, Porto de Moz, Senador José Porfírio, Uruará, and Vitória do Xingu.
Through this innovative governance model, the Company invests in projects and actions that enhance local talents and strengthen the regional economy.
