Norte Energia carries out botanical conservation actions in the Xingu region, focusing on the rescue, reintroduction, monitoring, and study of native vegetation in areas of dryland forests, alluvial forests and vegetation typical of rocky areas. Participatory monitoring programs, carried out with the participation of local communities, resulted in the identification of 21 plant species and the preparation of a book documenting these results.
The book can be accessed here (https://www.norteenergiasa.com.br/media/gallery/docs/20240402-104907-436-13F7$natureza-no-xingu-monitoramento-participativo-da-flora-2022-norte-energ.pdf). During the implementation of the reservoirs, approximately 4 million seeds and propagules were collected, in addition to more than 200,000 plants and seedlings, with a reintroduction rate into nature of 97.8%. 19,475 dried herbarium specimens (exsiccates) were also produced for scientific purposes, which were incorporated into the collections of teaching and research institutions.
Since 2022, an RDI project has been underway, focusing on restoring the vegetation of Volta Grande do Xingu, developed in partnership with the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (UFRA), the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) and Ideflor-Bio. The initiative seeks to innovate seedling production techniques for slow-growing species through grafting and inducing early flowering with the use of paclobutrazol, thus promoting greater efficiency in seed production and the implementation of strategic plantings.
In 2024, monitoring of seedling planting experiments in densely packed clumps, the project’s first technical workshop and presentations at scientific events, particularly the 1st National Agronomy Congress, were carried out. The project also resulted in the defense of two master’s theses as part of the UFPA Graduate Studies Program in Biodiversity and Conservation, expanding technical-scientific knowledge about the Amazon flora.
These initiatives demonstrate Norte Energia’s commitment to environmental conservation, the development of innovative solutions for ecological restoration, and the promotion of scientific and traditional knowledge of the Xingu region.
Restoration partnerships – Living Forest Program
Since 2022, Norte Energia has participated in the Living Forest Program, in partnership with the BNDES and two other supporting companies, with a total investment of BRL 26.64 million, aimed at the ecological restoration of the Xingu Basin. The actions involve planting native species and introducing agroforestry systems in order to promote environmental recovery, the creation of ecological corridors, and income generation based on non-timber forest products. The initiative contributes to the climate agenda, biodiversity conservation and the strengthening of a sustainable economy in the Amazon.

In 2024, based on the Xingu public notice, four projects were selected by the Living Forest Management Center – composed of the BNDES Bank, the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (Funbio), Energisa, Fundo Vale, and Norte Energia – to be implemented over 48 months in the Xingu Basin, totaling 700 hectares of restoration area. The projects cover different territories and community profiles, with a focus on ecological restoration and social and productive inclusion, i.e.:
Project 01 – RESEX Verde para Sempre: Implemented by the International Institute of Education of Brazil (IEB), with 200 hectares restored in Porto de Moz (PA), involves traditional extractive communities;
Project 02 – Sustainable Xingu: Implemented by the Central Cooperative for Organic Production of the Transamazonian and Xingu Area (CEPOTX), with 150 hectares restored in the Middle and Lower Xingu regions, involves the cultivation of organic cocoa;
Project 03 – Reset Assurini: Implemented by the Guamá Foundation, with 150 hectares restored within the Itapuama Settlement Project, in Altamira (PA), aimed at rural producers; and
Project 04 – On the Trail of the Living Forest: Implemented by the Xingu Seed Network Association (ARSX), with 200 hectares restored in areas of the Upper and Middle Xingu, involving indigenous peoples from three indigenous lands in Mato Grosso.
