Norte Energia’s corporate purpose is the operation, maintenance and exploration of Belo Monte HPP, as well as restricted interest (non-commercial) transmission lines associated with the Plant.
The Belo Monte hydroelectric power complex is the world’s fifth largest hydropower plant in generating capacity and the largest Brazilian fully domestically-owned HPP. The complex has an installed capacity of 11,233.1 MW and firm energy delivery of 4,571 MW, with no changes compared to the previous year. In addition to other engineering structures, it consists of two power plants: Belo Monte HPP and Pimental HPP, the construction of the latter being completed in 2019. *Note: additional text referring to EU1 content.
Established as a special purpose company, Norte Energia won the concession auction in April 2010, and became responsible for constructing and operating the Belo Monte HP Complex. The main powerhouse has 18 UGs producing 611.11 MW each, while the complementary powerhouse has six UGs yielding 38.85 MW each. Through the National Interconnected System (SIN), the Complex supplies energy to the entire country since the start of its operations in 2016.
The project’s Area of Direct Influence (ADI) covers five municipalities – Altamira, Anapu, Brasil Novo, Senador José Porfírio and Vitória do Xingu –, and the Area of Indirect Influence (AII), where social and economic benefits extend, reaches six other municipalities – Gurupá, Medicilândia, Pacajá, Placas, Porto de Moz and Uruará – of the Xingu area, in Southwest Pará.
Its reservoirs cover an area of 478 km², of which 274 km² correspond to the original Xingu riverbed during the flood period. An important feature of the project is its run-of-river operation.
The energy generated by the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Complex is marketed in a variety of ways:
– 70% in the regulated market, through Power Purchase Agreements in the Regulated Environment, serving 26 states and the Federal District through 45 distributors;
– 10% allocated to self-producers and Norte Energia’s direct or indirect partners, and
– 20% to hydrological risk management (i.e., Generation Scale Factor, GSF) and energy trading in the free market.
Norte Energia ended the year with 2,579 active suppliers, including 740 new registrations, 1,953 updates and 2,350 supplier cancellations. Remaining in the supplier base is subject to technical performance and adherence to the Company’s ESG guidelines.
